Which do I need?

On-farm LoRa, or anywhere 4G?

Most farms run LoRa ear tags and collars across their own land, and add a few 4G collars for stock that travels. Both report to the same dashboard.

Tracker FAQs

Do LoRa ear tags need a SIM or mobile signal?+

No. LoRa ear tags report to on-farm gateways rather than the mobile network, so there's no SIM per animal and they keep working in mobile dead-zones. Only 4G GPS collars use the mobile network.

What's the range of a LoRa ear tag?+

Up to around 10 km to a gateway in good conditions, depending on terrain. One or more gateways cover a wide grazing area, and a sealed coin cell lasts roughly 1–3 years.

What if there's no gateway and no mobile signal at all?+

Choose the satellite (NTN) ear tag. Where there's no gateway in range and no cell service, it falls back to a Non-Terrestrial Network satellite link and sends a periodic position from anywhere with a clear sky — ideal for open range and the remote back-country.

How do master and slave tags cut the cost?+

A few 'master' ear tags carry the expensive LoRa or satellite uplink; the rest of the herd wear low-cost Bluetooth 'slave' tags that relay through the nearest master. You cover thousands of head while only paying for the long-range radio on a handful of animals.

Do I need a gateway, and can I use my own network?+

You need at least one LoRa gateway for ear tags and GNSS collars (4G GPS collars don't). The tags are ChirpStack-compatible, so they work with standard LoRaWAN network servers as well as Flockarewe's shared ingest.

When should I choose a 4G GPS collar over a LoRa tag?+

Use 4G GPS collars for animals that range beyond your gateway coverage, or high-value stock you want pinpointed in near real time. They include a data SIM and need mobile signal where the animal roams. See our LoRa vs GPS guide for a full comparison.

Can I mix ear tags and collars in one herd?+

Yes. Tag the main flock or herd with low-cost LoRa ear tags and put GNSS or 4G collars on the animals you want pinpointed — everything shows on one live map with the same geofencing and alerts.
