Tupping Time: What Tracking Data Tells You Through the Breeding Season

Tupping is the highest-leverage six weeks in the sheep calendar. Everything about next spring — how many lambs, how tight the lambing period, how much of the season you spend in the shed at 3am — is decided now, largely by animals you cannot see, in fields you visit once a day if you are lucky. It is also the period where a problem costs the most and shows up the latest: a tup that stopped working in week one is not obvious until scanning in January, by which time nothing can be done about it.
Tracking does not replace raddle, a keel mark or a good stockman's eye. What it does is shorten the gap between something going wrong and you knowing about it — from weeks to hours.
The tup is the animal worth watching closely
One tup covers a lot of ewes. If he goes lame, gets injured in a fight, or is simply not doing the job, the damage is measured in dozens of empty ewes rather than one. He is also, conveniently, a single high-value animal — exactly the case where a collar or tag earns its keep several times over.
Three things in the data are worth attention:
- Activity dropping off. A working tup covers ground. A sharp fall in daily movement, especially in the first fortnight, is the earliest signal you will get that something is wrong — lameness, injury, or a ram that has run out of condition.
- A tup that has stopped moving with his group. If his location is consistently apart from the ewes, he is either not working or has been driven off by another ram.
- Two tups converging. Rams that end up in the same place spend their time fighting rather than tupping, and fighting injuries end seasons.
Tip — Check the tups' activity data at the end of week one, not week four. A ram swapped out on day seven still gives you a useful lambing period; one swapped on day twenty-eight gives you a long, straggly one.
Keeping the groups where they should be
The other half of tupping management is simply keeping the right ewes with the right ram. That sounds straightforward until a gate is left on the latch, a wall gives way, or a group works out a gap in a hedge at the far end of a field you cannot see from the road.
Geofencing each tupping group to its field turns that from a discovery into an alert. A ewe crossing a boundary at 4am is flagged while she is one field away rather than found three days later in with the wrong ram — at which point you have lost the ability to predict her lambing date, and possibly the breeding plan for that whole group. The same paddock alerts that catch escapes the rest of the year do this job without any extra setup.
It matters more than usual now for two reasons: mixed-up groups break the records you rely on at scanning and lambing, and tups in particular will go through a hedge that would hold any other animal on the farm if there are ewes on the other side.
Cycles, returns and what the lambing spread is telling you
A ewe cycles roughly every 17 days. That gives the classic three-cycle tupping period, and it is why the raddle colour is changed every couple of weeks — the ewes marked in the second and third cycles are the ones that did not hold the first time.
Tracking does not detect service, and nobody should claim it does. What the movement record gives you is context to read alongside the raddle: which ewes were actually with which tup and when, so that a batch of returns can be traced to a group and a date rather than guessed at. If one ram's ewes come back in numbers in the second cycle, the data tells you where they were and whether he was moving normally at the time.
That same record is what makes the lambing plan real in February — groups, dates, and which ewes belong in which batch, without reconstructing it from memory.
The ordinary welfare jobs do not stop
Tupping coincides with the weather turning, and the usual autumn watch-list still applies:
- An animal that stops moving. A ewe cast on her back, caught in a fence or down in a ditch is the alert that saves an animal, and the odds of spotting her on a once-a-day walk-round in poor light are not good.
- Lameness spreading. A run of animals with falling activity in the same group is worth a proper look at feet before it becomes the whole batch.
- Group scatter. Sheep that suddenly disperse at night usually have a reason — a dog, a fox, or someone at the gate. Tupping fields hold your most valuable animals of the year.
- Ground conditions. Wet autumns put ewes on poached ground and undermine the condition you spent the summer building.
Set it up before the tups go out, not after
The practical version, in the week before turnout:
- Tag or collar the tups. If you track nothing else this autumn, track them — highest value, greatest consequence, smallest number of animals.
- Set a geofence around each tupping field and check the alerts reach the right phone. Test one.
- Record the groups in the system as you make them — which ewes, which tup, what date. Ten minutes now, and the scanning and lambing records write themselves.
- Check tag batteries and coverage across the fields you are actually using this autumn, which may not be the ones you used in summer.
- Note your turnout date. Every date that matters from here — first cycle, second cycle, scanning window, lambing start — counts forward from it.
What it is actually worth
The arithmetic is unusually simple at tupping. A ram that fails quietly in week one, unnoticed, can leave a substantial batch of ewes empty — and empty ewes are the single most expensive thing on a sheep farm, because they cost a full year's keep and return nothing. Knowing within days rather than at scanning is the difference between swapping a tup and writing off a group.
Everything else — the escapes caught early, the cast ewe found in the afternoon instead of the following morning, the group records that are still accurate in February — sits on top of that.

Can tracking tell me if a ewe has been served?
No — and be wary of anything that claims otherwise. Tracking gives you location, movement and activity. What it adds at tupping is knowing which ewes were with which ram and when, plus early warning if a tup's activity drops off, so you can read the raddle marks and scanning results against a proper record.
Should I track the tups or the ewes?
Start with the tups. They are few, valuable, and a single one failing affects dozens of ewes. Tracking the ewes adds group-level information — escapes, welfare alerts and accurate breeding records — and is worth doing, but the tups give you the fastest return.
How quickly would I know if a tup stopped working?
A marked drop in daily activity usually shows within a day or two, and separation from his group shows immediately. That is the point of it — a problem caught in week one still leaves you time to swap a ram and keep a tight lambing period.
Will geofencing stop groups getting mixed?
It will not physically stop anything, but it alerts you the moment an animal crosses a boundary — usually while she is still one field away and easy to put back. That is what prevents the breeding records from being broken for the rest of the season.
