Sheep GPS Trackers Compared: Collars vs Ear Tags vs Virtual Fencing — What Suits UK Flocks?

Search for a sheep tracker and you'll be offered three quite different technologies wearing the same name: GPS collars that report a precise position, LoRa ear tags that locate the whole flock through your own on-farm network, and virtual-fencing collars whose real job is containment. Each is right for somebody. The trick is knowing which job you're actually hiring the device to do.

The three approaches at a glance

  • GPS collars — the animal carries its own GPS fix and reports it, either over LoRa to your gateways or over the 4G network with a SIM. Precise, heavier, rechargeable.
  • LoRa ear tags — a lightweight tag reports to gateways you own; the network works out a paddock-level position. Cheap enough for every ewe, battery lasts seasons.

GPS collars: precision, per animal

Virtual fencing: a different job entirely

Virtual-fencing systems — Nofence is the name most UK graziers know — use a GPS collar that plays a rising audio warning as the animal approaches an invisible boundary, followed by a mild electric pulse if it keeps going. Stock learn the cues quickly, and the boundary moves with a tap on a map. Used on cattle, goats and sheep, it can graze ground that's impossible or uneconomic to fence.

But be clear about what you're buying: it's fencing, not record-keeping. You get position data because the collar has GPS, but the hardware is collar-grade — rechargeable, heavier and priced per animal accordingly, typically with an ongoing subscription per collar. If your problem is containment on unfenceable ground, it's a genuine answer. If your problem is knowing where 400 ewes are and having the records to prove it, you'd be paying for an electric fence you don't need on every animal.

So what suits a UK flock?

  • Lowland flock, fenced paddocks: LoRa ear tags across the flock for location, geofence alerts and records; collars rarely needed.
  • Hill and fell flocks: ear tags on everything (they work with zero mobile signal), GNSS collars on tups and lead ewes you want pinpointed.

Tip — Match the device to the question you ask most often. 'Is the flock where it should be?' is an ear-tag question. 'Where exactly is this one animal right now?' is a collar question. 'How do I keep them on this ground at all?' is a fencing question.
